Waste Guide

How to Dispose of Renovation Waste

Short version: nearly all of it goes straight in, plasterboard needs bagging separately, and a renovation fills a bigger skip than you think.

Your Options, Honestly

Three ways to shift renovation waste. The right one depends on who is doing the work.

  • Your Builder Takes It

    • Cost: Rolled into their quote
    • Effort: None: it is their problem
    • Handles: Whatever the job generates
    • Best for: full-service jobs where you are not lifting anything yourself.

Worth checking it is included before you assume it is.

  • Tip Runs

    • Cost: Free, plus fuel and your weekend
    • Effort: High: load, drive, queue and repeat
    • Handles: A boot-load per trip
    • Best for: the last few bits.

Which Skip Size?

Renovation waste is bulky rather than heavy, so it is usually one of these two.

Timber, units and plasterboard eat space fast. If you are mixing in a lot of rubble, drop a size and keep the weight down.

What Counts as Renovation Waste?

In It Goes

  • Timber, skirting, doors and old floorboards
  • Old kitchen and bathroom units
  • Tiles, plaster and general building rubble
  • Plasterboard: keep it bagged separately
  • Carpets, underlay and packaging

Not These

  • Asbestos: needs a licensed removal contractor, whatever it is in
  • Paint, solvents and adhesives: council hazardous waste service
  • Gas bottles and pressurised canisters: back to the supplier
